  1. Locate the two position wires that are attached to the switch/turnout
  2. Locate the ground wire that is attached to the switch/turnout
  3. Cut or desolder the wires located in the previous two steps
  4. Attach the two position wires leading from the switch/turnout to the Monocacy Trains module using the provided wire harness
  5. Attach the ground wire leading from the switch/turnout to the Monocacy Trains module using the provided wire harness
  6. Attach the wires leading from the track power supply or battery to the Monocacy Trains module using the provided wire harness
  7. Optional: Connect up to two (2) outputs to the Monocacy Trains module using the provided wire harness.
  8. Carefully cover the connection points with electrical or kapton tape
  9. Mount the Monocacy Trains board onto the layout or other desired location

Once the Monocacy Trains control module is installed, place the train on the track and supply full power.  Alternatively, if using a battery for a power source, connect the battery.  For more information, please check out the wiring diagram below.

Getting Started

android-app-store

The first time the Monocacy Trains app is opened it will begin looking for devices automatically.  This is referred to as “Device Discovery”.  The app will actively search for Monocacy-powered model devices for a brief period of time.  If no devices are found,  discovery can be restarted.

Device List

If the app discovers more than one Monocacy-powered model device, the Device List screen is displayed.  This screen gives an overview of the discovered devices and also allows for quick control of your setup.

Key features of the Device List screen:

  • Details shown for each device include a custom thumbnail icon, custom name and throttle control.
  • Use the button in the upper right-hand corner to restart device discovery.  The Android back button can also be used.
  • Tap the STOP ALL button just above the locomotives in the list to apply a brake to the motor(s)
  • Tap the ALL OFF button at the bottom of the screen to turn everything off.  This means that all discovered locomotives and their lights will be off.
  • Tap the ALL ON button at the bottom of the screen to turn everything on.  This means that all discovered locomotives and their lights will be at full power.
  • Drag the throttle control to quickly control each one of your Monocacy-powered locomotives
  • Tapping the name or icon of an entry will go to direct control for that locomotive
  • Tap and hold the device name to ignore the device for the current session.  This is handy in situations when someone else would like to control the train simultaneously.

Device Control

If only one Monocacy-powered locomotive was found or one was selected from the Device List screen, the Device Control screen is displayed.  This screen allows for direct and advanced control of each locomotive.

If this is the first time a Monocacy-powered locomotive is being controlled from the Device Control screen, the New Device Wizard is displayed.  This wizard walks through the process of setting the direction and number of lights installed on the train.  This screen is only showed once.

Key features of the Device Control screen:

  • Details shown include a custom name, custom thumbnail icon, throttle control, directional control, bell & horn sounds and individual lighting control
  • Use the Android back button to go back to the Device List screen – if more than one device was discovered.  If only one device was discovered, tapping the Android back button will go back to device discovery.
  • Tap the rename icon in the upper right-hand corner to set a custom name for the locomotive
  • Tap and hold the camera icon to set a custom image for the locomotive
  • If multiple devices are being controlled, use the left and right arrows on either side of the icon to quickly move between them
  • Drag the throttle control to the left to decrease the motor speed.  Drag the throttle control to the right to increase the motor speed.
  • When the locomotive is stopped, use the REV/FWD buttons to change direction. REV = reverse and FWD = forward.
  • Use the STOP button as a brake
  • Use the Bell icon button to toggle a bell sound
  • Tap the Horn icon button to play a short horn.  Hold the Horn icon button to play a long horn.
  • Tap each individual lightbulb icon to toggle the lights (under the OUTPUTS section)
  • Tap and hold the light names to set a custom name
  • Tap the Settings button in the lower left-hand corner to go the Settings screen
  • Tap the Identify button in the lower right-hand corner to identify the currently controlled locomotive (flashes lights and/or moves the motor)

* As the locomotive is controlled, sounds are played.
* On a tablet, the “control dial” is displayed.  This allows the throttle to be controlled with a dial-like control.

Device Settings

The Settings screen allows further customization of each Monocacy-powered locomotive.  Settings such as direction inversion, number of lights, acceleration rate, max throttle/governor and locomotive type can be changed at any time and are saved directly to the locomotive.

Key features of the Device Settings screen:

  • Direction Inversion – enable this setting to invert the direction of the locomotive (the default value is off).  This is necessary when the direction of the control app and the locomotive are reversed.
  • Number of LEDs – set this value to the physical number of lights that have been connected to the Monocacy Trains module.  This can range from 0 to 2.
  • Acceleration – set this value to adjust the acceleration and deceleration rates of the locomotive.  The lower the number, the faster it accelerates and decelerates.
  • Max Throttle – set this value to the maximum speed of the locomotive.  For most people, this will be full power (100), while for others a lower speed might be desirable to avoid derailments.
  • Locomotive Type – tap the entry to set the locomotive type (Steam vs. Diesel).  At this time, this changes the train sounds played on the Device Control screen.
  • Software Update – this shows the current version of the software running on the Monocacy Trains module
  • Serial Number – this shows the serial number of the Monocacy Trains module
  • Factory Reset – tapping this entry will reset the Monocacy Trains module back to its factory settings.  This will remove all stored settings, including custom names and images.
  • Tap the Android back button to go back to the Device Control screen

Software Updates

As features change, Monocacy Trains might periodically release software updates for the locomotive control modules.  When an update is available, the Device Control screen will display a notification to start the update process.  The update typically takes less than a minute.  The locomotive control modules are updated wirelessly, without the need for intervention.
